Mammut Cave
It was the great total length of underground passages and chambers that gave this cave system its name. At present 60 km of passageways are explored, a portion of 1 km can be visited on guided tours.
The cave features a difference of altitude of 1.199 m between the highest located entrance and the lowest ever reached point.
This survey ranks Mammut Cave in place 30 among the longest caves and in place 31 among the deepest caves worldwide.
During the1 hour tour visitors learn about the formation of caves and the working techniques of cave explorers. Time is also spent by our guides to explain how former “Palaeotraun” – precursor of today’s Traun River – could once have rushed through the mountain. Higher up, in the “Midnight Cathedral”, the problems faced by cave explorers during multi-day expeditions are discussed.
There are no limits to imagination in the “Realm of Shadows”. Here nature itself created magic images composed of white ‘moon milk’ and brown iron oxide. “Cave Venus” and “Lady with Crinoline “ are very descriptive of what can be expected. Installations created by the Linz University of Art, such as “Incidence of light” and “Cave Scan” provide complementary elements of surprise.
